Dawes Glacier, Endicott Arm, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, Alaska – Image 2625

I have staked out glaciers for hours waiting for a calving, and it almost never happens. The glacier usually calves when I least expect it and almost never when I am ready. Capturing the ice falling off the face of a glacier involves a lot of luck. What I have found is that my luck improves the longer I wait. The Dawes Glacier face is somewhere between 200 to 250 feet high. In this photo the blast from the falling ice almost covers the 250-foot height. This image illustrates the month of November in my 2010 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Nikon D700, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, Digital Capture-Mark Kelley
