Cover of the Southeast Alaska 2013 Calendar Alaska – Image 2796

I have been shooting calving glaciers for over 32 years and most of the images just do not work. It is terribly frustrating bearing witness one of the amazing powers of nature and not being able to translate that moment to a still image. In person the sight and sounds are totally mind blowing but when frozen in a still frame the image looks static. I could not believe my good fortune when I arrived onboard the “MV Adventure Bound” (http://www.adventureboundalaska.com) at the Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm to find a raft full of red jacketed people sitting in front of the glacier. I shot this photo wider than I normally would have because I wanted to include the raft in the frame if the glacier calved. Well, the glacier calved and I got my shot giving me the perspective I needed to show just how big and massive this glacier face is. The face stands about 150 to 200 feet high. But, really if you want to capture the full impact of a calving glacier shoot in video mode with the sound on. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.Camera body: D700, Lens: Nikkor 16-35mm f/2.8 /digital capture/ISO 200/ polarized© Mark Kelley
