Coastal Brown Bears/ Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2712

This is one of my favorite brown bear images. These bears were hunting goats on Gloomy Knob. The sow had three cubs, but only two are shown in this photo. What I like about the photo is the monochromatic background of the grey rocks with the reddish brown bears standing in stark contrast. This is an environment I don’t expect to see bears. The cliffs are steep. There were plenty of goats in the area but seemed to have little to fear. A mother brown bear with three cubs does not make for an efficient hunting party especially in the goats home turf of rocks and cliffs. This image was shot after my book on Glacier Bay was published. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Once again as a reminder, I will be leading a small boat photo cruise in Glacier Bay National Park this coming summer with Dolphin Charters (www.dolphincharters.com), July 6-12, 2011. Come join me for a week-long cruise in the bay exploring Alaska.Camera body: F5, Lens: Nikkor 500mm f/4 Film: 35mm Velvia, ASA 50, digitally scanned© Mark Kelley
