Brown Bear, Fortress of the Bears, Admiralty Island, Alaska – Image 2762

On Wednesday(1-25-2012), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) ran a feature on Admiralty Island called “Fortress of the Bears” on “Nature”. Check out “Nature” online to see the program. In support of this programming, I plan to display four weeks of brown bears images (final installment). Brown bear twin cubs stand up in the tall grass trying to find mom. In the world of bears, adult male (boar) bears will kill cubs. Mom and cubs are always on the lookout and do not like to be separated for very long. I photographed these two from the photo/viewing point at Pack Creek where all visitors are required to stay as mandated by the US Forest Service that co-manages the santuary with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The previous two images were all taken from this vantage point. My thanks goes to Ronn Patterson on Dolphin Charters (www.dolphincharters.com) for hiring me as a photo leader on a week long tour through Southeast Alaska on his boat, Delphinus, in 2011 and taking me to Pack Creek for this shot. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Camera body: D300, Lens: Nikkor 80-200mm F/4 1.4 tele extender, ISO 800, on tripod© Mark Kelley
