Black Bears, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2723

I love to photograph bears in the spring. The bears are eating the sedges in the tidal flats. Right after coming out of their winter dens, bears have a tough time finding food. These large animals survive the first months or so out of the den just on plant matter. The bears being out in the open fields at low tide make them accessible photographic subjects. Once these animals move to the rivers and streams to feast on fish, they are much harder to find, access and photograph. This image appears in my photo book on the park: “Glacier Bay National Park: Alaska.” Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Once again as a reminder, I will be leading a small boat photo cruise in Glacier Bay National Park this coming summer with Dolphin Charters (www.dolphincharters.com), July 6-12, 2011. Come join me for a week-long cruise in the bay exploring Alaska. Camera body: Nikon F5, Lens: Nikkor 300mm f/4 Film: 35mm Velvia, ASA 50, digitally scanned© Mark Kelley
