Bald Eagles, Haines, Southeast Alaska – Image 2435

Two bald eagles sit in popular trees along the banks of the Chilkat River. Bald eagles collect along the Chilkat River by the thousands every November and December. Underwater hot water springs keeps the river open into the winter which in turn supports a late salmon run. As food gets scarce and the interior rivers freeze up, the eagles collect in Haines to feast on these salmon. This photo illustrates the month of December in my 2006 Southeast Alaska calendar.
