Bald Eagles, Chilkat River Valley, Haines, Alaska – Image 2345

Bald eagles collect along the Chilkat River near Haines during November and December. Several thousand bald eagles congregate annually along a five-mile stretch of the river kept open during the freezing winter months by warm underground springs. A late-season salmon run keeps the eagles’ attention. This photo illustrates page 100: the week of 11-28 to 12-4-04 in my weekly Engagement Calendar for 2004.
