I shot this photo of a mother brown bear with her two cubs while standing on the deck of my friend’s home at their Admiralty Island Wilderness Homestead lodge. Theisland supports one of the highest densities of bears in the world and on this island bears outnumber people. Brown bears has several color phases from light brown to black. Because these bears are so dark, many people assume they are black bears; but there are no black bears on Admiralty Island.
