” In my 34 years of photographing the Mendenhall Glacier, I have never seen the water right in front of the glacier go mirror calm until this day in late October right before freeze up.”

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the few Alaskan glacier accessible by road and the third most popular tourist attraction in Alaska. The Mendenhall Glacier is located just 12 miles from downtown Juneau and is one of 38 glaciers flowing from the 1,500 square mile Juneau Ice Field. From its source at an elevation of 4,500 feet to its terminus in Mendenhall Lake, the Mendenhall Glacier is approximately 12-13 miles long. Mendenhall Lake is a freshwater lake created by rainwater and glacier melt.
