Backcountry skiers hike up to Mount Ben Stewart outside the boundary lines of Juneau’s Eaglecrest Ski Area. The area closes around the first week of April. With the chairlifts shut down for the season, the diehards start what they call “second season,” which means hiking up under human power. There is still plenty of snow coverage well into May and plenty of weekend warriors to enjoy it.
