Rie Muñoz, Frye Museum, Seattle, WA

Sep 16, 2021

I am honored that the Frye Museum in Seattle found my image of Rie Muñoz and requested to use it in their online video “Guided Artwork Discussion: Rie Muñoz.” Rie was an amazing artist and I started collecting her work when I was an undergraduate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks between 1974-1978. I never thought I would meet her. She was way too famous. But, when I moved to Starr Hill in downtown Juneau with my wife, Rie became our neighbor and friend.  Over the years, I was fortunate to have taken a number of portrait sessions with Rie. This image is my favorite portrait of Rie, and one of my most favorite portraits that I ever had the opportunity to take.
