A large male orca, accompanied by its killer whale pod, lunges out of the water in celebration of a successful hunt of a sea lion. Orcas, or killer whales, are marine mammals. There are two groupings of killer whales in Southeast Alaska. Resident pods only eat fish, and transient pods only eat other marine mammals such as seals and sea lions. An average large male orca will be 26 feet long and its dorsal fin can be around 6 feet tall.
