Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #3102

Apr 23, 2019

I have loved every cover of every Juneau Calendar since publishing the first calendar 31 years ago. Yet, this cover is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. I remember the night well: I was standing along the edge of Mendenhall Lake in late November and it was around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. My car was too far away and I tried to keep warm while waiting for the aurora by pacing around and flapping my arms. During my 2.5 hours on the lakeshore I had just two brief aurora shows…but OH what a show. The first featured a double rainbow aurora over the glacier in the moonless sky. Much later a second rainbow aurora arched over the glacier under a full moon sky. The full moon lit up the white and blue shimmering ice of the glacier. It was magical, unlike anything I have ever seen before. The 2020 Juneau Calendar is now available online or in stores. Thanks for visiting, enjoy!
