Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, Alaska #3438

Oct 25, 2022

After 43 years of photographing Mendenhall Glacier, this photo rates as one of my most favorite images of the glacier. On this fall day, I waited for the sunrise to light up the Coast Range mountains behind the glacier but before the light actually lit the glacier face. Once the sun hits the glacier, the sun’s white-hot light washes out the delicate blues found so famously found in glacier ice. More than half a million people visit the Mendenhall each summer but most never see this angle, because this photo is taken from the lake shore of Mendenhall Glacier campground on the opposite side of the lake from the visitor center. This image illustrates the cover and the month of October in the 2023 Alaska calendar that can be purchased in local Juneau bookstores or online. Thank you for visiting and for the gift of your time.
