Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, AK #3362

Sep 24, 2020

I have been photographing the Mendenhall Glacier and its adjoining icefield since I first arrived in Juneau in 1979 as the newspaper photographer at the Juneau Empire. Since 1979 I have amassed thousands of color slides, black and white negatives, and 12,500 plus digital images of the Mendenhall area. Needless to say, I love my time in and around the glacier and am always searching for a new, wonderful image. On the morning of September 15 I was poking around the edges of Mendenhall Lake when I came upon this scene and it took my breath away. In all the years I have only taken a few perfect mirror reflections of the glacier and to find this scene with fall colors was just so amazing. It makes up for the days, upon days, upon days of searching and finding nothing, and wondering why I am always carrying this heavy backpack of cameras. I produced a photo book on the Mendenhall Glacier in 2017 which features 57 of my images and text by Nick Jans. It is available at markkelley.com. Thank you for visiting and be well. -Camera: #Nikon #D850, Lens: #Nikkor 24-70mm, Digital Capture, Polarized, Handheld ©Mark Kelley
