Margerie Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

Jun 30, 2020

Margerie Glacier is probably the most visited tidewater glacier in the world. During a regular, non-COVID summer, over half a million cruise ship passengers cruise up to this glacier and spend a couple hours hanging out. About a mile wide, Margerie Glacier is 21 miles long and stands 250 feet above and 100 feet below tideline. I first visited Glacier Bay National Park in August 1980. Then in May 1981, along with Joel Bennet and John Howe, I spent 10 days on a zodiac boat trip in the park to photograph harbor seal pupping. I have returned countless times since then, and all totaled have spent close to a year in the park over the past 40 years. I love Glacier Bay and am happy to share an image of one of the world’s most iconic tidewater glacier as my cover of the 2021 Alaska calendar. Thanks goes to Ben Haight for the plane ride up the bay to get this photo. Stay healthy and thank you for visiting – Camera: #Nikon #D800, Lens: #Nikkor 24-120, Digital Capture, Handheld ©Mark Kelley

Did you know that my 2021 calendars will also be available online in six-pack specials? For many years the six-pack special has been a holiday favorite only available at Juneau’s Public Market at the end of November. Due to these unusual times I have decided to make this special available all year round and I will include the six free mailers plus six Mark Kelley note cards. Thank you for supporting your local artists!
