Ice Cave, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #3087

Dec 12, 2018

I first visited the Mendenhall ice caves in the summer of 2009, when my son Gabe took me under the ice for my first time. I was so visually amazed by what I was seeing! One of my images from that day’s shoot ended up in a Patagonia catalog. Between 2009 and 2017 the caves became extremely popular; so popular that they were often ranked #1 on things to do in Juneau by “Trip Adviser.” On a sunny winter weekend there could be hundreds of Juneauites walking across the frozen Mendenhall Lake to visit the ice caves. Because of the cruel reality of global climate change the glacier is continuously retreating. I took this image in March 2017 and by that summer all of the more easily accessible ice caves had melted away. The ice cave image illustrates the month of November in my 2019 Alaska Calendar and July in my 2019 Juneau Calendar.
