Humpback Whales, Juneau, Alaska #3128

Nov 29, 2019

I love photographing humpback whales, especially in summer’s evening light. On calm evenings a whale’s blow can travel well over twenty feet into the air and hang suspended in the air for a relatively long time, maybe 5-10 seconds. Add in the late evening back light and the blow becomes a translucent plume of vapor. In a strong breeze a whale’s blow barely breaks the surface and these vapor spouts quickly dissipate. This image illustrates the month of August in my 2020 Juneau Calendar. I will be at the Juneau Alaska Public Market, today through Sunday, to personally sign your calendars, and will bring along my scarves and note cards. Please come by and say hello.
