Humpback Whales, Alaska #3353

Nov 15, 2023

Humpback whales are for the most part rather solitary mammals except for when they are bubble-net feeding. I have counted as many as fifteen humpbacks participating in a bubble-net feeding event. It amazes me how these school-bus-sized mammals organize themselves underwater and are able to create multiple bubble-nets every five to ten minutes. This image shows the whales breaking up after a bubble-netting session and traveling together in search of the next meal. This image illustrates the month of August in the 2024 Alaska Calendar .
