Humpback Whale, Inside Passage, Alaska #3425

Nov 18, 2021

An adult humpback leaps out of the ocean along the shore of Admiralty Island. This behavior is called “ whale breaching.” This 45- to 50-foot-long marine mammal lifts its 35- to 45-ton body almost entirely out of the water. I am always amazed at the unimaginable strength this must take. To me, this behavior is one of the wonders of our world. This image illustrates the month of May in my 2022 Juneau Alaska Calendar.
