Humpback Breach, Chatham Strait, Alaska #3047

Feb 28, 2018

A whale breach usually comes out of nowhere, and everything happens so fast that it is almost impossible to frame and capture the breach with your camera. The good news is that a whale will often breach multiple times after its first breach. So if you missed the first jump do not put the camera down while cursing the image you just missed, because you are about to miss it again. Current cameras have amazingly fast autofocus and a photographer definitely has a chance of catching this fleeting moment. The whale in this photo was so close it filled my viewfinder. I was able to capture six shots at eight frames per second while shooting this whale’s first and only breach. I will be showing this image along with many others during the Fireside Chat at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center on Friday, March 2, with a show at 6:30PM and 8:00PM. I hope to see you there.  Thank you for visiting – Camera: Nikon D500, Lens: Nikkor 80–400mm, Digital Capture ©Mark Kelley
