Eagle River, Juneau, Alaska #3373

Nov 16, 2020

Juneau experienced a 20.6-foot tide yesterday, the highest tide of the year. I spent the day out at Eagle Beach with friends and watched the water completely cover the beach. The tide was still very high while we hiked back to the parking lot on a trail that led through the woods next to Eagle River. The incoming tide countered the flow of the river and its current seemed to have come to a standstill, creating this perfect reflection of the Coast Mountains. I was shooting this scene, thinking it was pretty good, when it just got better. I heard these thrashing noises and could not figure out what the heck was happening. To my surprise, a cross-country skier suddenly appeared with her dogs on the bank across the river from me and this added a wonderful human element to the image. I blasted away, shooting ten frames, and then she was gone. I could have hung around all day never expecting anyone to show in the exact spot that made this image work. Sometimes the unexpected is so unexpected it leaves me speechless. How lucky I am to encounter these improbable moments.
