Calving Glacier, Johns Hopkins Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – #2921

Jul 22, 2015

I just returned from seven days onboard Ronn Patterson’s M/V Delphinus. Eight photographers joined us for a full week in Glacier Bay National Park and we had an amazing trip. The next three weeks I plan to share just a few of the many wonderful images I was able to shoot. I have been photographing Glacier Bay for over 35 years, and this year was the first time I was able to get really close to Johns Hopkins Glacier. As soon as we got there on July 5, Johns Hopkins started going off like the 4th of July fireworks. In the space of two hours we had at least seven major calvings. This image is the first calving and I just pulled up and shot.  I was shooting my Nikon 80-400mm in DX mode which gave me the equivalent of a 600mm lens. Everything happened so quickly, I did not even see the kayakers in the frame. I was focusing on the falling ice and wanted to keep the birds and harbor seals in the frame. It was not until later that I realized the kayakers were in the frame…what an amazing surprise! I will be leading the same trip to Glacier Bay National Park with Dolphin Tours next year, July 13-19, 2016.  Come and explore the bay with me and the great crew on the M/V Delphinus.  Thanks for visiting.   Camera: Nikon D800,  Lens: 80-400mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom,  Digital capture, ISO 800 – Copyright Mark Kelley 2015
