Brown Bears, Gloomy Knob, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska # 3383

Dec 1, 2025

This is one of my favorite images of bears, and I have photographed a lot of bears. This image was shot in the early spring on Gloomy Knob in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Gloomy Knob is pretty much a steep barren rock wall falling into the ocean — meant for mountain goats, not bears. I am guessing the bears were hunting for a possible opportunity of catching a kid goat as a spring meal. What I love about this image is the contrast of the brown fur against the barren gray rock. I also love the amazing detail and the sharpness of the bears in the photo, from the front all the way to the back, check out their claws. This image is the June image in my Alaska 2026 calendar. The calendar is available for purchase in Juneau-area stores and at markkelley.com. Have a wonderful holiday season.  Mark
