Black Wolf “Romeo” Mendenhall Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2649

Surrounded by the Mendenhall Glacier and Towers, a black wolf the local Juneauites nicknamed, “Romeo,” crosses the frozen Mendenhall Lake to get between his hunting grounds. Wolves mate for life and as the story goes, his pregnant mate was killed in the spring of 2002 on the road to the glacier visitor’s center. Romeo showed up on the ice during the winter of 2002-03 and has remained in the area ever since as a lone wolf. His silhouette moving across the ice for the past six years has been almost a daily reminder of just how lucky we have been to watch a wild wolf. This photo illustrates the cover of my Juneau 2010 Calendar as well as the the month of November. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
