Black Bear, Anan Creek, Alaska – Image 2765

Oct 1, 2013

I am continuing with bear photos for the next three weeks. On March 14, I will being doing an Alaska Wildlife Alliance SE “Wildlife Wednesday” presentation with Jay and Jayleen Beedle starting at 7pm in the UAS Egan Lecture Hall. I will be showing bear images. Here, a black bear strips the skin of a freshly caught pink salmon at Anan Creek. I shot this image from the photo blind at the Anan Wildlife Observatory. The observatory features a bear viewing platform featuring a large upper viewing deck and a creek level photo blind. A well fed bear might only eat the skin, the brains, or the belly of a female salmon filled with eggs. A less well fed bear will most likely eat the whole salmon. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Camera body: D300, Lens: Nikkor 70-200mm F/4, ISO 1000© Mark Kelley
