Aurora Borealis, Juneau, Alaska #3378

Nov 27, 2020

This photo was taken from the Mayflower Island causeway next to Sandy Beach looking down Gastineau Channel in Juneau, Alaska. What is unusual about this photo is that I took it facing south. Northern lights usually get more intense the closer one gets to the Arctic Circle, about 570 miles north of Juneau. Northern lights enthusiasts in Juneau are normally looking toward the northern sky hoping to see the lights, but every once in a great while the lights are so strong, they swirl 360 degrees above our heads, even in Juneau. Additionally, pink-colored auroras are a rare sight in the Juneau area. Green auroras are by far the most common color, and with some luck a viewer might witness yellow, red, blue, white, and purple lights. This photo illustrates the month of December in my Juneau 2021Calendar. Both the 2021 Juneau and Alaska Calendars are available at my outdoor holiday signings in Juneau, or they can be ordered at markkelley.com, or purchased locally at Hearthside Books, Juneau Artist Gallery, Ben Franklin, Alaskan Brewing Tasting Room, Super Bear IGA and Foodland IGA. Thank you for visiting and be well – Camera: #Nikon #D850, Lens: # Nikkor 24-70mm, Digital Capture, Tripod ©Mark Kelley
