This image is of the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) streaming over the mountains in the Brooks Range, located about 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The photo was shot under a full moon night at about 2 a.m. with temperatures hovering around minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit. I love how the full moon lights up the snow, making for a surreal landscape that looks like high noon. Look closely and you can see the trees casting moon shadows on the snow. The dark foreboding night sky reminds me it is still night and I should be back in my cabin sleeping. This image is the December image in my Alaska 2026 calendar. The calendar is available for purchase in Juneau-area stores and online at markkelley.com. This year marks my 37th year at the Juneau Public Market. I look forward to seeing everyone. The market opens Friday, November 28, and runs through Sunday, November 30. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season. Mark
