Auke Bay Winter Docks, Alaska – Image 2586

Oct 1, 2013

I photographed this scene after a week of below-zero temperatures. The water was over 50 degrees warmer than the air, creating the steam rising from the harbor while the extreme tidal action prevented the harbor from freezing over. The sunrise lit the steam, giving the scene its rich warm color. This image illustrates the cover of my 2009 Juneau Alaska Calendar which has been published for 20 consecutive years.Nikon F5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, Fuji Velvia slide film-Mark Kelley
