Alaska’s Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, South Sawyer – Image 2777

Oct 1, 2013

Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness features three tide water glaciers: the two Sawyer Glaciers and the Dawes Glacier. In 1880, when John Muir first explored Tracy Arm, he found only one Sawyer Glacier. By 1990, a photo taken by the USGS showed the Sawyer Glacier had split into two. The north arm is called the Sawyer Glacier and the southern arm contains the appropriately named glacier: the South Sawyer. Both glaciers flow out of the Stikine Icefield, and both are retreating. The South Sawyer is retreating so rapidly, the condition is referred to as a “glacier collapse”. This image can be found in my newly redesigned book on Tracy Arm on page 25. Thanks for visiting.
