A Kayaker paddles out of Amalga Harbor into the sunset – Image 2032

Bethany Bereman of Juneau paddles her kayak through the August sunset-colored waters of Amalga harbor about 25 miles north of downtown Juneau in Southeast Alaska. I shot this photo on speculation for Patagonia’s outdoor wear catalog. Their photo editors returned the photo unused, saying I shot too pretty for their needs and that they would like to see more photos emphasizing sweat and grit. Oh well! This photo has sold dozens of times to many clients, including a double page spread in Sierra Magazine. The photo was shot with a Nikon F3 camera, with a 80-200 F/2.8 zoom lens on Fuji 50 film.-Mark Kelley
