Aurora Borealis, Brooks Range, Alaska #3100

Apr 11, 2019

I spent the last week of March along the Dalton Highway, mainly around an area 72 miles north of the Arctic Circle. I was traveling with two friends, and we were eager to photograph northern lights. We were lucky enough to be greeted by the northern lights three nights in a row. In this image the lights blasted over Sukakpak Mountain (4,459ft) in the Brooks Range. Sukakpak is a steep marble mountain rising 3,000 feet above road grade. The lights started around 11pm and raged on until about 2am. I have witnessed many northern lights in my 45 years in Alaska, but nothing like this night. We could read a book lit by the aurora light.
