Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, Alaska #3091

Feb 6, 2019

In Juneau the last week of January was unusually warm and wet; rains washed most of the snow away at sea level, and covered the ice on the Mendenhall Lake with a thin pool of water. On Friday the skies cleared and the temperature nosedived into the low teens. The water that had pooled up on the lake’s frozen surface turned into flawlessly smooth ice, which made for some of the best outdoor skating we have ever had. Hundreds of Juneauites spent the weekend skating, walking, sledding, biking and playing hockey on one the best weekends of the new year. We are so lucky. Today the snow has returned and I am looking forward to a weekend of great skiing at Eaglecrest Ski Area. Thank you for visiting, enjoy.
