Nanny and Kid, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness – Image 2780

Photography is about moments. This moment between a nanny (mother mountain goat) and her kid (mountain goat baby) is just so sweet.  My first trip to photograph Tracy Arm was in 1980 and since then have probably made over 60 trips to the area. Only once have I seen mountain goats on the steep rock walls at sea level…close enough to photograph with any success.  Mostly they are high on the ridges and no more than a spot in your binoculars.  I was able to spend a couple of hours floating in a boat just off the cliff face with a herd of about 20 mountain goats.  The early spring trips in May present the best opportunity to see goats at sea level.  The heavy snows keep the goats low and as the snows recede up the mountain so do the goats. This image can be found in my newly updated and redesigned Tracy Arm book, “Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness”.  Enjoy and the photo and thanks for visiting.   Camera body: F5, Lens: Nikkor 300mm f/4/ 35mm color slide film/Velvia/digital scan© Mark Kelley
