Mark Kelley’s 2012 Juneau Alaska Calendar Cover – Image 2750

The cover of my 2012 Juneau Calendar is the same shot featured in Patagonia’s “Bitter Cold” catalog published this November. I shot the photo as a horizontal, and Patagonia cropped it to a vertical. Most of my shots are composed horizontally because my eyes line up horizontally across my face. If I was a halibut and my eyes lined up vertically, I would shoot more vertical images. Shooting horizontally seems more natural and most of my publications (books and calendars) lay out horizontally. But if one wants to be really successful as a commercial photographer, one should be shooting vertically as much as possible. Almost all magazines and catalogs are in a vertical format. My photos agents are always admonishing me for not shooting more verticals. This photo is of my son, Gabe, who guided me in the ice caves below the Mendenhall Glacier. Before leaving for a two year study of mountaineer in Chile, he was guide for Above and Beyond in Juneau and often took his clients into the ice caves. He spent a lot of time under the ice and we often referred to the exploration as glacier spelunking. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
