Juneau Ice Field, Alaska – Image 2534

Even though we are in the final weeks of the tourism season, folks are still flocking up to the glaciers in Juneau’s backyard. This fellow is getting a dog kiss from one of the sled dogs on the Mendenhall Glacier. The Juneau Ice Field has three helicopter companies that maintain dog camps on the different glaciers. On this excursion, cruise ship passengers get a helicopter tour of ice field, then they land and go dog mushing, and at the end of the trip they get to pet the dogs. I have never heard of anyone coming off this trip anything but ecstatic. This image illustrates page 77 in my newest book, Alaska: A Photographic Excursion.
