Killer Whales, Icy Strait Alaska – Image 2830

Oct 1, 2013 | 0 comments

Killer whales have been in the Juneau area on and off for the past month. There are two types of killer whales…the resident pods that eat only fish and the transient pods that eat only marine mammals. The more frequent views of the killer whales at this time of time coincides with the spring run of king salmon which are one of the fish-eating killer whales’ favorite foods. These animals were in Icy Strait and the images was taken from an Allen Marine catamaran. What I like about this photo is that the viewer can see all the impressive large pectoral fins of the whales. They separate well from the background. Additionally, I will be the photo leader on a week-long trip (August 30-September 6, 2013) through Southeast Alaska on board the 50-foot custom trawler “Delphinus” captained by my good friend, Ronn Patterson. The trip starts in Wrangell and ends up in Ketchikan. The trip will visit Anan Creek and travel through Misty Fjords. For more information contact Ronn at trips@dolphincharters.com or check out their website at www.dolphincharters.com. This image appears as my November image in my 2014 Southeast Alaska Calendar now celebrating its 20th year of publication. Thank you for visiting.
