Breaching Whale, Stephens Passage, Southeast Alaska – Image 2336

The one part I really like about being a photographer is that I have to be out in the world experiencing life to do my job. I had spent about four days near Hobart Bay shadowing a group of humpback whales. I had gotten a lot of good photos, it was my last day on the whale grounds, and I was about to give up with the failing light. Then this whale started breaching close to us. We were able to move the boat and line up it’s last breach with the sunset. Sometimes I really get lucky. This photo illustrates the month of December in my 2004 Southeast Alaska Calendar.
