Every November through December, thousands of bald eagles collect along theChilkat River in Haines, Alaska. While all of the other rivers in Alaskaare freezing shut, a warm springs keeps the Chilkat River open. A late runof salmon provides the birds with a valuable source of food when thepickings are slim everywhere else. Well over a thousand eagles will sit inthe trees next to the river along mile 19-21 of the Haines Highway.
