Aurora, Echo Cove, Juneau, Alaska-Image #2940

Dec 2, 2015

Green northern lights, or aurora borealis, stream in the sky above Lions Head Mountain in Berners Bay, while casting a mirror reflection in the calm waters of Echo Cove. In Juneau, Alaska, the northern lights do not display as often or as strongly as for our Alaskan neighbors to the north, and of course a display is weather dependent. Juneau’s photo advantage over more northern displays is the great water reflections in the unfrozen ocean shoreline running the full length of the local road system. My base exposure for northern light is ISO setting between 400 and 800 at 30 seconds with an aperture of F/4. This exposure recommendation is just a starting point and exposures will vary depending on the strength of the display.
