“I shot this photo while on a self-assignment for my whale book. The trio of killer whales cruised right by us. My camera lens actually got misted by one of the whale’s blow. I wanted to get intimate with the animals so I twisted around and hung myself as far over the boat’s gunwale as possible trying to get to water level with the whales.”
Orcas or killer whales are one of the fastest animals in the sea, capable of swimming at top speeds over 30 miles an hour. Orcas usually cruise at 3.5 miles/hour yet they are capable of setting a cruising pace of up to 8 miles/hour.
