The face of a glacier, also called the terminus, is unstable due to a glacier’s constant forward flow. Glacier calving occurs when chunks of ice break off the face. These chunks of floating glacier ice are called icebergs. Glacier ice is heavy and dense and its crystalline structure absorbs all colors of the light spectrum except blue. The magical blues from deep inside a glacier will eventually turn white where glacier ice is exposed to the sun and the elements.
