Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #3127

Nov 26, 2019

During clear and full-moon nights, when I was younger, I would ski or snowshoe up Spaulding Meadows, past the John Muir cabin, and then up to Auk Mountain to wait for the moon to rise here in Juneau, Alaska. This night in January it was especially cold, maybe zero degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind was blowing. Once on top of the mountain, I had to wait over two hours for the moon to rise. I was freezing and chilled to the bone. A friend who joined me in the trek had long ago deserted me. I thought about bailing out over a hundred times, but the full moon finally did rise above Shark Fin, the Mendenhall Glacier and a frozen Mendenhall Lake, and the final sunset rays cast this amazing pink light on the snow. I was so happy that I did not wimp out.
