Halibut and boys in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2010

Two of the three boys in this photo are my sons, Owen and Gabe, and the third boy is my nephew, Brian, from Michigan. This photo was taken during a trip to Glacier Bay in the summer of 1997. Before coming to Alaska, Brian had only caught blue gills, perch and bass. Brian’s first fish in Alaska was a chicken halibut (a 5 to 10 pound fish that we consider too small to keep), and we told him he had to release it. He looked crestfallen and as he was releasing the fish, one of the boys asked what is the biggest fish he had ever caught. He pointed at his fish as it sped away toward the bottom and said that one. Several fish later, Brian caught the 45-pound halibut in this photo. I shot the photo on Velvia film with a Nikon F-5 camera body and a 35-70mm F/2.8 zoom lens.-Mark Kelley
