In July and August, fireweed lights up the open meadows across Alaska. Huge fireweed fields bloom in the shadow of the Mendenhall Glacier. The 12-13 mile long glacier is one of the 38 glaciers flowing down from the 1,500 square mile Juneau Icefield, approximately the size of the state of Rhode Island sized.
