Purse Seiners, Chilkat Mountains, Bridget Cove, Juneau, Alaska - Image 2654 Purse seiners anchor at South Bridget Cove next to Mab Island at mile 37 along the road north of Juneau which ends at mile 40 (Echo Cove). The purse siene fleet was in the area to fish a spring herring opening. The year after this photo was taken the Alaska Department of Fish and Game closed the fishery for good in the Juneau area because of low stocks. Historically, Juneau area enjoyed huge spring herring runs but as development moved in the herring stocks disappeared along with the fishing boats. Enjoy the image and thanks for visiting.
