Northern Lights, Shrine of St. Therese, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2987

Dec 21, 2016

Photographing northern lights usually means a very long night with little sleep. This image was taken on just such a night of chasing ghost lights that never really amounted to anything. When I finally got home at four AM with nothing to show, I saw this faint glimmer of green in the north sky. I got back on the road and found this volcano of green northern lights erupting across the sky over the island at the Shrine of Saint Therese. The show lasted for about ten minutes and then it was gone. I thank the lucky stars for this image that illustrates the month of December in my 2017 Alaska Calendar. Happy holidays and thank you for visiting – Camera: Nikon D800, Lens: Nikkor 24-120 F/2.8, ISO 1000,tripod, digital capture ©Mark Kelley
