This photo shows a humpback behavior called tail lobbing. During taillobbing, a humpback may hold as much as a third of its lower body (whalesare approximately 40 to 50 feet long) above the water waving its tail orfluke (usually 15 feet across) in the air, and from this position the whaleusually pounds the water repeatedly.
