“Bear Salad”, Brown Bear, Pack Creek, Admiralty Island, Alaska – Image 2814

Oct 1, 2013

Join me Sunday, 2-17-2013, at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center for a repeat of my fireside chat on “Juneau’s Backyard: Wales, Bears and Wilderness” for two shows starting at 4:30pm and 6pm.During the next five weeks, I will feature images of brown bears photographed at Pack Creek last summer. In this image, a third season female munches on beach sedges and yarrow in a field of wildflowers about twenty feet from a group of visitors standing in the spit viewing area. The US Forest Service and Alaska Department of Fish and Game control access to Pack Creek. Visitors can watch bears from two locations: one, the spit viewing area overlooking the tidal fats surrounding Pack Creek and two, the covered tree viewing tower tucked away in the old growth forest. The covered tree stand gives a visitor a view of the bears as they pop in and out of the heavy forested stream edge to fish for salmon. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
